Slab Puzzle Container
During the slab pot unit, I have learned how to construct a creation just by rolling a slab and joining each piece together. This unit was different from other units in that I had to pay more attention to slipping because I had secure all four sides of the rectangular base. On the corners of the base, I attached extra clay to prevent cracking and breaking the pot. I found slab pot easier than the other units because I had to have the measurements of the body and the lid before I started building. I chose to make an owl because I wanted to design an animal that could be shaped in rectangles. While I was going through Pinterest, I found an image of an owl that got my attention. This eventually led me to design an owl. The attachment of triangular ears and wings with patterns make the pot obvious that it is intended to be a bird. When carving out the puzzle, I intentionally sliced a star-shaped puzzle because the owls are active in the darkness. In creating the slab container, my goal was to maintain a plastic clay body and keep the side slab hold itself upright. I feel that I have reached my goal to build a strong body but I have made bad measures for puzzle lid technique. I carved out the lid that shrunk out of proportion. I had hard time adjusting the puzzle to fit into the lid. Moreover, after it was fired, one of the wings broke apart. I feel that the process in making the slab pot was successful but I still had struggles in taking the puzzle out and gluing broken parts. By learning the techniques in slab pot, I am glad that I am slowly learning to become a real artist and coming up with creative idea that can be made in any form of a pot. I would like to expand my knowledge to a greater degree and challenge myself to make a better pot. I enjoy how I am learning to become a real artist each day and learning to apply the skills into my own style of a pot. As a person, I learned that it is natural for people to make mistakes because there are always solutions to fixing them.
